Christmas Coffee Morning 2023

On Saturday December 9th, fifteen members of the Association met at the Princess Pavilion to celebrate Christmas with a Christmas Coffee morning.  It was good to sit down and chat with everyone and enjoy the variety of fancy dress and costumes that members had concocted. The costumes ranged from a snowman (Steve) to a Bavarian dancer (Mike - who else?). My personal favourite were Helene as some sort of elf in nightwear and Grenville the grinch but everyone looked fantastic.

We were entertained with a Christmas ‘mastermind’ quiz that Steve had meticulously prepared. Only eighteen questions. Either Steve thinks we are all related to Albert Einstein or he made a conscious decision to ensure we felt like dummies. I’m not sure which but it was good fun and I was in the winning team that managed marginally over 0%! It was really entertaining - especially as Steve had to fight to make himself heard above the cacophony of a recorder band playing Carols at the other end of the room. Well done Steve! Steve not only volunteered to set the quiz but also provided the prizes for the winning team.

The prize, a bottle of Prosecco, for the best fancy dress went to Steve .Thoroughly deserved it was too.

Sunday Lunch at the Golf Club's 'Above the Bay'

On Sunday 24th September, fourteen members of the Falmouth twinning Association met for lunch at the Falmouth Golf Club's 'Above the Bay ' restaurant.

Those attending were able to chose from an extensive menu that, as well as Sunday lunch favourites like roast beef, also included other options like haddock, trout and vegetarian.

Everyone that attended enjoyed their lunches, and eat their full. The portions were gigantic and the accompanying vegetables were lovely.

It was great to touch base with members and lovely to see so many twinning stalwarts there.

We met at 12.30p.m. and it was close to 3 p.m. when we trudged our weary, bloated, ways back home.

Poor Harold missed the lunch because he wasn't feeling too good. Hopefully he's recovered and we wish him the best.

Photo Evening for the visit of Rotenburg

On the evening of Friday 8th July 2022 the Association gathered at Peter and Iris’s home for a photo evening. The evening was to reminisce and share memories of the recent visit of Landkreis Rotenburg (Wümme).

Thirteen members came bringing items for the buffet, drinks and photo albums with them. By the time the buffet was fully assembled there was, as usual, more food than we could eat. It was nice to see a new face there in the shape of Alison who accompanied Nigel. It was also a lovely surprise that the mayor, Councillor Steve Eva and his wife Vicky called in for a short time to show his support for twinning. It was most encouraging.

The evening started with three videos put together by Peter. Two covered the actual visit and the third focussed on some flowers that photobombed almost every shot taken at the Official Reception at The Penmorvah Manor Hotel.

The buffet and general chat followed the videos and while I thank everybody for their buffet contributions, I must give a special mention to Mike and Sheila’s Falmouth Bay crab sandwiches. They were delicious but didn’t survive the initial assault on the buffet table.

After the buffet, still photos were shown on the television and printed copies passed around. When we ran out of photos, Mike decided that we should sing some party songs and we finished the evening with raucous versions of ….. and the Wild West Show. Hilarious! After the evening broke up, Iris and I went to bed laughing.

2020 AGM at the Council Chamber 11th March

On 11th March at 7 p.m. the Association held its Annual General Meeting in the Council Chamber. The Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor Steve Eva presided. After the mayor's opening address, the chairman, Peter Downie, gave a review of the last year. The incumbent committee was re-elected along with a new member Lynn. Iris takes over from Fran as Treasurer.

After the official business was concluded, members attending enjoyed wine and light refreshments that were provide by the members attending. It was a very good evening and everybody seem to thoroughly enjoy the social gathering.

2020 Festive Dinner at the Falmouth Hotel

For some reason nobody else in Falmouth wanted a festive dinner on the 4th January so we had to join the 120 or so other soles that wanted to celebrate at the Falmouth Hotel on 11th January. This was a blessing in some ways because there was some atmosphere but was also a curse because there appeared to be more clients than the hotel could efficiently cater for.

We were honoured that the Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor Steve Eva and his wife Vicky were able to join us and, after the wine ordering, we were sat on two tables. One of 11 and the other of only 10 because poor Kaye dropped out at the last minute.

The evening was very enjoyable overall. The tables were very nicely presented and decorated. We were given funny hats, crackers and poppers to help the evening go with a bang. (excuse the pun)

The only problem was that the food for the main course was served sans vegetables! Unfortunately the hotel had forgotten all the vegetables and gravy boats for our two tables. By the time we realised they were not coming and the hotel had managed to scrape together some meagre offerings, the main courses were cold! Luckily the Mayor had eaten his without the veg while it was still hot. He’s not a veg man so he wasn’t too put out.

The hotel tried to make amends but giving each table a bottle of prosecco and a bottle of wine. This was met wit delight by the ones drinking but, as some were driving, it was not universally lauded. On a personal note, Iris and I found their white wine mixed very acceptably with our chosen red.

It was great to see a few of us dancing especially Sheila and Mike (another one drinking). The evening finished too early for some but not soon enough for others.

December Country & Western  Evening

On Friday 6th December 2019, members of the Twinning Association descended on Pat's lovely home in Penryn to enjoy a festive Country and Western Ho-Down.

The well-attended evening started off with wine and the customary exchange of Christmas cards, followed by a superb buffet supplied by the members. This took so long to eat that we had to cut short our line-dancing (if you could call it that) in the kitchen. Fran showed everybody the moves and the rest of us did our best to keep up!

Our Chairman Peter thanked Pat for hosting the evening and Helene, our secretary for arranging our festive dinner next month as well as the dates of our Landkreis twin's visit in May 2020. Nigel ran a raffle that raised around £30 for our coffers. The wonderful prizes being donated by members attending.

Later in the evening, Pat produced a magnum of champagne for everyone to toast the twinning and a couple of recent birthdays. The whole evening was a big success and great fun, as the photos show. Thanks Pat!
